Geologists reveal a new diamond formation mechanism

This week, the British "Natural-Communication" magazine published a geological paper explaining a new mechanism that can explain how natural diamonds are formed. According to this new model, a drop in pH (pH) in the deep water-rock interactions of the Earth will have the ability to cause precipitation of diamonds.

In the past, the cause of diamond formation has been attributed to the redox reaction of liquids or magma in the depths of the earth – scientists believe that chemical reactions begin with carbon dioxide or methane, which provide a range of different starting materials and ultimately Created a diamond. However, people's understanding of these reactions is very limited, and the effects of pH changes have never been studied.

The Dimitri Sverjeski team at Johns Hopkins University in the United States has established a theoretical model in the past - the deep water model of the Earth, and published a paper in Nature revealing the carbon in the deep underground. In many details, this underground carbon may affect the origin and history of life on Earth, and mantle fluids containing organic carbon species should create diamonds in an unknown way.

This time, the Sverjeski team used this theoretical analysis model to simulate the conditions that diamonds can form, using aqueous liquids and elevated temperatures and pressures, by simulating the changes in liquids during flow and their silicate rocks. The interaction eventually revealed that the interaction of liquid and rock resulted in a decrease in pH, which resulted in suitable conditions for the diamond to precipitate.

In the above phenomenon, the redox reaction previously used to explain the formation of diamonds did not appear, but it is currently believed that the previous theory may still be effective in some cases.

The new model is quite useful for studying the different natural conditions of diamond formation and can be extended to include more complex parameters. Ultimately, such research can help unravel the complex history of liquids deep in the Earth's geology and geology.
