Next up in our new Favorite Pattern Series is Rachel from Nest Full of Eggs (you might recognize her as saganaga within the Flickr community). Rachel creates stunning, intricate, and classic pieces for her children, and we're thrilled to have her join us today to talk about her beloved Oliver + S pattern.
The School Photo Dress is Rachel's absolute favorite Oliver + S pattern due to its simplicity and sleek design. It’s timeless, fully lined, and boasts a professional finish. Both Rachel and her daughter adore pockets, so the hidden kangaroo pocket on this dress is her favorite feature.
Picking up new sewing skills often comes with purchasing an Oliver + S sewing pattern. For Rachel, installing her very first invisible zipper was during the process of sewing the School Photo Dress back in January 2012, following the instructions provided. Since then, she referenced those paper instructions every time she installed one in other garments (until she obtained the PDF for the Fairy Tale Dress later that year, allowing her to access it on her laptop).
So, what exactly is the School Photo Dress? It’s described as follows: “This lined, above-the-knee-length, A-line dress features a hidden, on-seam, front kangaroo pocket and an invisible back zipper. View A includes a stand-away, roll collar and ¾-length cuffed sleeves. View B adds a ruffled collar and gathered, bias-bound, ¾-length sleeves.â€
When sewing this dress, you’ll also develop skills such as creating collars, gathering fabric, inserting kangaroo pockets, working with linings, and setting in sleeves.
It has a difficulty rating of 3 out of 4 scissors and is available in sizes 6 months to 12 years in both digital and physical formats.
I’ve made the School Photo Dress just once so far, but sewing another one has been on my to-do list for quite some time. About two years ago, I crafted one based on view A in a checkered pattern—brown with pale pink. My daughter quickly outgrew it, and the dress was donated to charity. I would love to attempt making one using view A with view B sleeves. To give the inside an even more polished look, consider finishing the armhole seams with bias binding.
